Kathy Ulrich Music

Both of my parents were professional musicians, so music was always a big part of my life. I started writing songs when I was twelve. But I loved theater too and decided to pursue a career in acting. I went to Boston University and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Like any aspiring actress, I headed to New York and was cast in several productions, including Shakespeare in the Park and the National Company of Godspell. But, however much I enjoyed my time as an actress, it didn’t take too long for me to realize that my real passion was for music and songwriting. This realization was triggered, in part, by my father who gave me a guitar before I headed off to study theater.  After I married, my husband bought an old upright piano and rebuilt it to help me expand my songwriting palette. 

I used my music and theater background in a number of areas.  I taught music in a few different Christian schools and worked with kids on musical and dramatic performances.  For several years, I worked with the Theater of Light, an affiliate of Lincoln Center Institute, doing songwriting workshops in elementary schools and performing an original musical presentation called Faithwalk.  I wrote songs for Vacation Bible School programs through Music Precedent, a national resource of Christian songs for children.  I have ministered at many different churches with my presentation, Women of Influence, a one woman musical and dramatic exploration of seven women of the Bible.

I was teaching music in the Christian school that my kids attended and wrote a collection of songs to support the character development curriculum. Many of these songs were released in a series of CDs entitled BODY BUILDERS, published under the Bridgesong label. Since these CDs are no longer available, I’ve just released the completed collection of character songs in a new BODY BUILDERS CD.   

The first CD I recorded and released under my own label was Women of Influence, which is referenced above.  Over the years, I wrote numerous songs for special occasions (weddings, lullabies, funerals, kids going off to college etc). These have been assembled in a collection entitled Through the Years. 

Another CD of Children's songs born out of my work with kids is entitled Six Billion Five Hundred Million - kids songs about God's love. My second most recent CD, Your Unfailing Love, is comprised of worship songs that I hope bring people into a place of God's Presence and Love. There is also a selection of wedding songs entitled Distinctively Different Wedding Songs – wedding songs for your special day  (these are available in MP3 format only) .

I have a number of other musical projects which I plan to release in the near future.  For example, there are several musical dramas which I’ve written.  One of these dramas is a musical passion play entitled He Is Risen which has been performed numerous times in theaters and churches in the Northeast. I hope to have a package for this available with an accompaniment track, script and blocking.    

I also have several musicals appropriate for grade school/middle school children – these include An Animal’s Tale (a musical Christmas play), No Place Like Home (another Christmas production), and The American Character Contest (a take-off on American Idol using the BODY BUILDERS songs).  Another project in the works is a collection of songs for Nursery School and Kindergarten aged children.
